Blog Response #3

Stotan!, Chinese Handcuffs, Running Loose, and Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes  all involve intense topics that add to the plot.  Talk about the point in which you became hooked into your book.  What did Chris Crutcher do to hook you? Describe any moment or moments in the book where you didn't want to put the book down.  What will you always remember about this book?

Comments

  1. The book I have is Chinese handcuffs. the plot is about a boy named Dillon and a girl named Jennifer. Dillon's brother committed suicide and Jen gets raped by her father and now her stepfather. they are both fighters, fighting to push away the pain in their lives. It hooked me because it was interesting and I wanted to know more about both characters. Chris Crutcher hooked me because it started off confusing at first going back and forth with Dillon and Jen, so I wanted to know more about their stories and how they had pain in their lives. A point in my book where I didn't want to put it down was when Jen tired committing suicide in front of Dillon after running out of her basketball tournament. she found out her mom was having a baby and it was a girl and she didn't want that baby to get raped like her stepfather did to her, so she thought if she committed suicide it would be easier on everyone. I will always remember how hard Dillon and Jens lives were even though they acted like normal kids around everyone else.

    1. I feel that all of his stories are very depressing. Because in my book h has the main characters girlfriend die and your book seems to be all about death. You could really tell that we are reading a book wrote by the same author.

    4. when Dillon tried to stop jen that jen beats the carp out of him. I thought it helped get the feeling of desperation jen had That she was so far gone, and so ready to just go that she did not think of her repercussion s of hurting dillion. I think that was another reason that also compelled me to read.

  2. I'm reading running loose, and two of the main points of this book are football and relationships. But about 40 pages ago he got kicked off of the football team. But just recently his girlfriend just passed away from a car collision. One thing I've been thinking about was a quote that really fits this book. Enjoy the times you have with people; everything comes to an end.

  4. My book is Stotan. I don't remember the exact moment on which I kinda got hooked on the story line. I think it was when Nortie's dad beat him up because of someone hitting his car. Like it wasn't even his fault and yet his dad still beat him up. That is also one thing I will probably never forget about this book. How Nortie constantly gets beaten up by his dad and yet he still goes back to his house. Like that just doesn't make any sense to me.

Chris explained the facts with great detail. Moments where I couldn't put the book down was when Becky dies and when Louie got kicked off the football team. 6. I am reading the book Chineese Hancuffs. I was hooked when it started talking about Preston , Dillion's brother, who commited suicide right infront of Dillion. It tells the whole story about how he killed himself. The book also talks about a girl Jen who is sexually assulted by her father, and now her step father. Once it talked about those two things, i just wanted to keep reading to see what would happen. I will remeber the part where Dillion talks about his brothers down word spiral.

Hunter Fosdal the book i am reading running loose and became hooked with the book when they were running the mile. the mile added to the plot between boomer and Louie as Louie tried so hard to beat Boomer, but Boomer tried harder than Louie and beat him even though Louie and carter thought it was good, he let him win. After reading the salmon river game the book became fast paced and i loved reading it so i kept reading and could not put it down trying to find a place to stop as it kept getting better and better. i will always remember when Louie stood up for what he believed even facing being expelled and off the football team

  9. I am reading the book Chinese Hand cuffs two points in the book are Dillion and how his brother committed suicide and also about a girl named Jennifer and how she gets raped by her stepdad. The spot that hooked me the most was when Jennifer was playing basketball and went running off the quart. This made dillion chase after her and she went running to the water tower to jump off and kill herself. But dillion caught her just in time and the reason Jenn did it was because her mom is having a baby with her stepdad, and she didn't want her new baby sister to go through the same thing when she grows up.

  10. The point in which I became hooked on the book Chinese Handcuffs was the part where Dillon saves Jen from jumping off of the bridge. Chris Crutcher does an excellent job of including imagery in the very intense and high-pressured scene. At this point in the book, I could tell there would be some heavy stuff about to unravel, which in turn caused me to not want to put the book down. I was interested to find out how these two high school students with very traumatic home lives would work together to save each other. After Jen tells Dillon about her mom's pregnancy and her fear of what her stepfather might do to the baby girl, I became glued to the book in hopes of finding out what Dillon would do with this new information about his friend Jen. Considering the first time Jen opened up about her stepfather raping her to Dillon, he wanted to turn him into the authorities. Its apparent to see Dillon is protective over Jen and Chris Crutcher does a good job of making that clear.

  11. I am reading the book Running Loose and I became hooked in this book when Louie tried to stand up to the coach for telling Boomer to practically kill Washington. Louie had confronted the coach and the coach basically told him he was wrong, so he walked off the field during the game and quit the team. After all this happened, he was suspended for not being sorry for what he did that night. I did not want to stop reading the part where Becky had gotten into a car accident and passed away. This was an extremely shocking part in the book, and it was nothing I expected. That is a part I will remember because of how much of an impact it had on Louie.

Louies teammate severely injured one of the opposing players so they could win. in this scene there was so much emotion and that really grabbed my attention. 1. The part of where Sarah confessed what really happened really got me hooked also. I part where i couldn't put the book down for me was the letter where Sarah written it to Eric to explain the truth. I was so into it also. What do you think did Chris Crutcher do to hook you? 15. One reason Chris got me hooked was Preston's unliving himself, It was an awful thing but it just made me sit there and go "how much worse can this get? " It gets a lot worse. the suicide and Jessica's issue with her father. Was just the tip of an iceberg and even when I'm 2/3 way though the book there is little to none improvement it just keeps getting worse. It has a lot of mentions of sexual abuse and suicide, that makes it seem like if you were to watch a car crash its horrible but you cant take your eyes from it. In a way this makes me want too keep reading to see if there is an end to there personal hell

  16. for me personally Stotan! has never really hooked me at all. i only read to get my reading done because i have to. the way that Chris Crutcher wrote this book is a literal car crash, this book can never decide what it wants to be about one second, you're reading a swimming book the next you're reading a book about abuse and then all of the sudden you are reading a book about racism. this book never sticks to anything and i 100% guarantee the author doesn't even know what it is about. i won't remember this book because it is bad.

  17. I am reading the book Stotan! The moment I became hooked with the book was the time when they were at the Christmas dance. Walker found Nortie standing in the doorway and his face was all beaten up from his dad, but Nortie didn't feel any pain because he was took drugs that Walker's brother gave him. Walker, Lion, and Jeff left the dance and found Walker's brother, to see what kind of drugs he gave Nortie. Then they went over to Nortie's house and packed his things, but Nortie's dad appeared and he had a gun and told them to get out of his house. This part of the book was full of action which really hooked me into the book. I will always remember what the guys did to help Nortie get out of his house for good.

  19. I'm reading Running Loose and in the first chapter I wasn't very hooked because the main character started talking about football and I'm not a big football fan so I wasn't interested. Then when the big game happened, I started realizing that this book wasn't just about football. It was about the characters and the connections they had with each other because of football. I became more invested when Louie's life started going downhill. Chris Crutcher has a good way of making characters that will remind you of someone in your own life and their actions may even remind you of yourself. I think the part where I am at right now is where I find that I can't put the book down because Becky, the main character's girlfriend just died and Louie started screaming and yelling at her funeral, basically embarrassing himself but I think it's valid. I am probably not going to forget what happened after the game with no one interacting with Louie and him getting suspended. It was interesting to see the way he lived his life after that.

  21. I am reading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. In the beginning of the book, I was not hooked on the book. My book does have intense topics but not until later in the book. The moment that really was the first part where I got hooked on the book was when Sarah told us everything that happened in the past. I just got really hooked and liked this book when all the drama and interesting events happened. Because to me there needs to be things happening nonstop in books to keep me interested Like everything with Sarah and eric and all the friends and enemies at school when they all started to connect and make connections. What I think Chris Crutcher did that hooks the reader is makes the scenes interesting and he has a lot of the things in the certain book that we can predict. And make our guesses about. There were sometimes where I did not want to put down the book indeed. Like for an example when Eric was fighting with Sarah's Dad. And all the intense moments. 27. I am reading the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. There have been a few times when I didn't want to put the book down. One of the times was when Sarah first got into Sacred Heart. I didn't want to put it down because I was curious how long she would be staying in there, would she ever speak, but mainly why she was in there and why she never spoke to anyone. Another time when I didn't want to put the book down was when Virgil Byrnes (Sarah's father) was in the backseat of Eric's car and then was attempting to kill him. I couldn't put the book down because I was curious as to if Eric would get away and free from Virgil, get hurt, or be killed. Chris Crutcher put a lot of detail in this scene making it so you can actually picture what is happening and what Eric is thinking and feeling. I will remember when Sarah was not talking and when Eric was being chased by Sarah's father because of the amount of detail that Chris Crutcher put into it so then you knew exactly what was happening, when, where, and why.

I agree with the second one also when sarah's dad being in the back of Eric's car it was very intense. I just needed to keep reading to find out what happened next. The part that really hooked me was when Dillon had his flashback of Preston shooting himself in front of Dillon. This scene had many parts that had me on the edge of my seat such as when Preston described the gang rape that he basically initiated in the bar, Preston blaming Dillon for his mental state and Preston constantly putting the gun to his head to mess with Dillon. Chris Crutcher hooked me and I did not want to put my book down during the chase scene of Dillon and the biker gang. I was extremely scared for Dillon and was not sure if he was going to get beaten or not, making me want to keep reading. The rest of the book has been very interesting as well including Dillon finding out about Jen`s secret and them trying to find resolutions to all the issues in there lives. I think the points in the book that will stay with me throughout this book the most will be when Preston killed himself and when Dillon found out about Jen being abused. These points had a major impact on the book and helpped the book become clear.

  30. I'm reading Chinese Handcuffs and the two main characters, Dillon and Jen, have two very traumatic lives. Dillon's older brother Preston committed suicide right in front of him. Jen has been raped for years by both her father and her step-father. Chris Crutcher hooked me because when I want to know how everything plays out for these characters. I want to know if Jen gets away from the abuse, and if Dillon is able to come to terms with his brothers actions.

  31. I am reading Chinese Handcuffs and it is mainly about Dillon and Jennifer's lives. I really got hooked when it started to talk about Dillon and Preston killing the cat because it was intense and seemed brutal. It also hooked me because it happened really early in the book so I knew the rest of the book would be interesting. Whenever the story jumped to Jennifer's perspective, I didn't want to put the book down because her story was never-ending, and it got worse as the book went on. I will always remember how Jennifer got raped by her dad and then her stepdad because it is a really sad part in the book.

  32. I am reading the book Staying Fat for Sarah Brynes. I got hooked at the part where Sarah first went into the mental hospital because it was unexpected and once, I found out that she was in there I wanted to find out why. I did not want to put the book down until I figured out why. While Sarah was in the hospital, she did not talk to anyone but Eric and at first, she did not talk to him. I will remember will Sarah's dad came to the hospital and basically told her that she was fine and needed to come home.

  34. The point where i got hooked was when Louie got thrown out of the football game by his coach. Chris really got me hooked with the way he wrote this story, and it almost feels like im apart of the story. Whenever Louie got kicked out of the game I just wanted to keep reading to see if Louie would do anything or say anything back to the coach.

  35. i am reading a book called Chinese handcuffs and the point where i was hooked is where they explained the cause of Preston's death and everything that led up to that point like the fact he was involved with bikers which is pretty cool and how he was going through many things in his life and turned to drugs and him and his brother Dillon killed the neighbors cat and buried it and another part of the book was that Jennifer was hyped up about being a really good basketball player but she ended up hitting her head and getting a concussion and that costed the game and while she's in the hospital it brings up all the memories of her dad molesting her and come to find out later her stepdad is the same way

  38. I am reading Running Loose. The main topic of this book is about a boy names Louie who is in high school and has many challenges he needs to face. The moment in this book when I did not want to put it down was when Louie called Coach Lednecky out about purposely taking out the other team's star player. I wanted to see what the outcome was and what was going to happen with Louie and his football career.

  39. I am reading the book Chinese handcuffs. The plot is about Dillon and his brother's suicide, as well as Jen and her history of being raped. they both find a safe place to share and fight their demons with each other. I would say a became hooked around chapter 6 when Dillon gets suspended for "having no respect" for Mr. Caldwell, The principal. From there the story begins to reveal the details of Dillons actions after Preston's death and about Jen's history. the book continues to get better after I got hooked.

  40. I am reading "Staying fat for Sarah Brynes". The point in which I became hooked was, when Sarah's dad started coming back into the picture, causing trouble and being a complete psycho. Like when he started to stay in the hospital with Sarah, because he thought she was lying about her condition, and was making threats to eric. The way Chris Crutcher just didn't let up on the craziness of the story, and how after one crazy and mind-blowing chapter, was an even crazier chapter, and jaw-dropping plots, throughout the whole story. The parts when we learned about what happened to Sarah and how crazy and evil her dad, was really kept the book in my hand, because I always wanted to see what could happen next or how much worse the story would get, and from what I know so far, the book is keeping me in this mind blown state. I will remember the book for being very interesting.

I wanted to keep reading and find out how this is resolved. I also wondered what the outcome of Louies football career would be.
