Blog Response #6

In all five novels, the main character or characters face adversity in one way or another.  Describe how you view the character's challenges in your book, and talk about how your character handles the hardships and struggles.  If you were in your main character/characters situation, how would you handle yourself?  What would you do?

  1. In the book Night Elie is the main character he faces many challenges throughout the book some challenge he faces is that he separates from his mom and sister when they arrive to this camp called Auschwitz. This was a horrible camp they would burn the Jews gave everyone a haircut and do many other disturbing things. I think the only way that makes him want to live is that hes still with his dad throughout the book. If i was the main character in this book i wouldn't know what to do because its such an awful thing there doing to the Jews, and they can't do much about it.

    5. Yes, Auschwitz was one of the worst of the concentration camps. How do you think the Holocaust changed and shaped our society today? It is hard for us to wrap our head around how this was allowed and why the Germans thought this was ok and the right thing to do to so many people.

    7. The indescribable things that the Nazis did to the Jewish population is horrible, but at least Elie had his father, or his situation could have been so much worse. Hopefully he and his father survive these atrocities together, and maybe they could even reunite with Elie's mother and sister after the war.

  3. Im reading the book Night, and in the book elle and her family go through many difficulties, like moving out of their house and moving to a gestapo. Getting separated from his mother and sister, basically becoming a slave at such a young age. I honestly cant comprehend the pain he would have gone through during this point in the book, i think the only thing that is keeping him going is his dad, because that's the last thing he has. If i were to go through all that pain i dont think i would make it, mainly because of the fact that the officers were so strict on everything.

  5. I am reading the book I Am Malala, we are reading about how women in Pakistan were not allowed to have an education and were expected to be covered and stay at home and fulfill household responsibilities. They were not allowed to leave home without being accompanied by a man and they were sold to be married to an older gentleman. Malala disagrees with this way of life and believes women are just as capable as men and should be able to receive the same education. She is not afraid to speak her mind and is an advocate for all women. In Pakistan Men were treated differently as soon as birth. They were celebrated when they were born, but the women did not get the same treatment. Malala knows this is not right and she works together with her dad to create equality for everyone. Malala goes as far as asking her father to let the students who cannot afford education to be let into her father's school for free, because that is how much it means to her. If I were Malala I to would not stand for this and would want women to be treated equally and given the same opportunities as the men. Even though people are against Malala and think she is too outspoken I can appreciate her willingness to prove those people wrong and want better for her county.

  15. In the book, A Long Way Gone, the main character, Ishmael Beah is surrounded by war. It seems that every village he goes to, it gets attacked a few days later. Ishmael has handled these situations very well so far, he is able to escape from the village and find a new village to stay in. Another thing that Ishmael has to deal with is being separated from his family. He has also handled this situation very well. If I was the main character I think that I would struggle moving from village to village and escaping the rebel attacks each time. 17. In A Long Way Gone the main character Ishmael is dealing with a ton of trauma and mental instability. He lost his entire family and cannot find them and lost his brother that he was with for the longest time. All of Ishmael's challenges are something that no kid should ever experience ever. I think he is handling it as best as he possible can. He definitely is struggling but is doing a good job with controlling his emotions. If I was in Ishmaels position, I would probably not be alive. I don't think I have the survivability that he does.

  18. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael escapes death multiple times because of the war going on. Ishmael is trying to stay alive, but he has to walk from village to village that can take days at a time. Ishmael also has to find food and water which has made him weak. Another thing Ishmael has to face is not knowing if his family is alive or not. Ishmael tries to survive and that is the main thing he worries about so he will put himself in danger just to survive. If I was in Ishmaels position, I don't think I could handle it because it seems gruesome. I don't think I could walk for days without family just to find food and a place to sleep. I would probably try and find my family and stay wherever they are. If I couldn't be with them, I would find a village I felt safe in and stay put.

  19. I am reading Kite Runner and I think Amir faces many challenges emotionally. Hassan was put in a bad place during the kite running and Amir witnessed it. Amir had to face the challenge of watching this happen to someone he cares about a lot and I feel like he feels obligated to protect his best friend. For Amir to have to act normal and feel guilty for this happening to Hassan, that is very hard on him. If i were put in this situation I wouldn't have any clue what to other than try to stop it from happening

  20. There are many problems that Malala faces, such as poverty in her country and natural disaster, but something that is consistent through the story is the treatment of women and young girls in Pakistan and the lack of education that they have. Someone tried to shut down Malala's school after they saw boys and girls entering the gates. Honestly, if I was in Malala's shoes, I wouldn't know what to do. It takes a lot for a person to make a change and I do not think I would be able to change the world the way Malala does. Malala likes to speak up about the education problem but i would not be able to because I'm not the best with speaking.

  24. I am reading I am Malala. The main character is Malala. I view the characters challenge's in the book as she fights her struggles with her dad. Mainly the struggles she faces in people that mess with her village and people who try to stop her dad from building his new school to let girls go to school because he thinks its very unfair that people in their area says that girls shouldn't go to school. With the whole thing about Fazlullah who is a guy that just came in the reading he is coming up with all these "Rules" that he came up with that everyone must follow like a couple is that all guys must grow a beard and you cant have TVs. So he goes around and destroys tvs. He also burns schools that he knows is a girl school. She handles these hardships by working with her dad and helping her dad continue to have a voice and fight back. Because he is the only one that has a voice right now. I would be so overwhelmed and be scared of this guy but know what he is doing is not right. I would try to fight back as well.

    2. I would probably be too scared to do anything against Fazlullah too, I feel like the small things that Malala's family do is a safe way to go against his rules, things like keeping the tv, Ziauddin not growing a beard, and secretly having cassette tapes are things that could get them in trouble but they do it any way.

  26. In the book A Thousand Splendid Suns Mariam has to face many problems. Mariam is faced with the mental abuse from her mother who then she hung herself one day when Mariam left to see her father. Once she did find where her father was, he didn't want anything to do with her that he left her outside all night and then the following day he sent her back home. Her father then forced her into a marriage that she didn't want to be in since she is just 15 and to a person, she has no idea who they are only to find out that he is 45 years old. Now she deals with not only the mental abuse but also the physical abuse that her husband (Rasheed) is putting on her. Rasheed has raped her many times to have a kid and his reason is because "That's what couple do" even though she has said no. each time she gets pregnant though she ends up with a miscarriage leading her to have 7 miscarriages. Rasheed is very angry to the point where he had Mariam eating rocks and breaking her teeth because supposably that is how her rice tasted.
Mariam dealt with her mother's death by lying in bed and in a deep depression, which is understandable because that is the only person that has ever fully been in her life the entire time. Then she dealt with her father by basically saying I don't ever want to see you again and I don't want you in my life. and now she is dealing with her husband Rasheed. She is doing whatever Rasheed wants because she is trying to please him and only him. She is not focusing or worrying about herself and her health, only him. If I was Mariam, I would someday when Rasheed is gone, I would grab my things and leave and never look back. I would maybe leave with Laila (another character in the book) since them 2 know each other and have both been through a lot. They both could kind of relate to each other and they both wouldn't be alone when they would leave.

  30. In my book Night, Elie faces tons of diversity, and it is all nasty and cruel. The Nazis invaded Elie's village and turned it into two ghettos, where the Jewish people had restrictions placed on them, such as a curfew of 6pm. If they were out past curfew they were shot. Another big challenge he had was being separated from his mother and sister upon their arrival at Birkenau/Auschwitz. Although Elie has to face these and many other hardships, I think he handles it pretty well because he was with his father the whole time. If I were in Elie's shoes, I think I would use the same strategy as him, trying to stay with my father or people I knew. I do not believe I would handle the challenges and adversity as well as Elie does, because he lived in a tougher time altogether, whereas I'm not used to harsh conditions.

And when has in a place were he feels finally safe something comes up and disturbs him even more, the constant stream off gore, drugs and weapons' doesn't help him or anyone in that situation .If i were in his shoes i don't think i would have done the things he did nor live as long as him.

    1. This book sounds harder to read than your last book, but I understand that you like to read disturbing books because it keeps your attention on the book. In my book there is a lot of conflict going on between the taliban and goverment but I wouldn't say it is a violent as what you are describing. Is he fighting against other children in the villages or is it against adults?

  36. In the book a long way gone the main character is ishmael beah. He grew up in a dangours community and it was full of war and killing. He has to leave that place and move to a new village with less fighting and war. He has to leave his family behind i think he did a very good job living on his own and fighting for himself i dont think i could do that.

    1. What do you think would happen if he didn't leave his community?

    2. I would agree with you on how he is doing a great job living on his own. For being as young as he is he sure knows how to survive to the greatest way possible in the terrible conditions.

  37. In the book a Thousand splendid suns Mariams main challenge is being forced to marry a much older man. Mariam just takes and the abuse and harassment and is pretty much his slave. If I were in here situation, I would save up enough money to run away and leave Kabul. I wouldn't be able to handle how she is leaving because it's not right and no one should have to live like that. I would end up fighting back or leaving.

  38. In the book A Thousand Splendid Suns Mariam faces many challenges, but the most challenging one is her forced marriage. Her husband expects her to do everything and have dinner ready when he gets home. One time she undercooked the rice and she was forced to eat pebbles. She also has several miscarriages that the husband blames her for. If I was in her situation I wouldn't no what to do. I would probably just try to run away from the problems.
