Upon completion of reading your novel, what have you learned about a different culture?  What shocked you?  What seemed strange to you?  What couldn't you believe?  Take time to give specific examples from your novel that share what you learned about history and a different culture.  Share your feelings about what you read.

  1. What i found very interesting was the fact that there was a huge city with lots of buildings and lights but the only thing that some of the people that lived in Sierra Leone knew was small villages with few buildings. One thing I couldn't believe was that the government got overthrown by the bad guys and that everyone in Freetown was put in danger or died. This is also a true story which makes it even more crazy through my eyes. One thing that was cool was that all of the village folk were always in good spirits and had big village meals at the end of each day. It was as if everyone at the village was family.

    1. I also thought that it was cool that everybody in the villages acted as one big family. They helped each other out and had fun celebrating with one another.

    3. do you think the book is more interesting with evryone in the village knowing and helping eachother out or everyone not really knowing eachother and not really helping eachother?

    4. hunter Fosdal my book was very interesting to learn about the different religions and how they contradicted each other.

    5. I also couldn't believe that Freetown got attacked and all of the prisoners were set free, and the city became lawless. I also thought it was nice that every village welcomed Ishmael even if it took a little bit and they always welcomed him to food and a place to sleep.

  3. After reading A Long Way Gone, I learned that as these children grew up around death and being separated from their families was all they knew. These children were separated from their family at a young age, so they had to learn how to do everything on their own to be able to survive. I was shocked at the fact that Ishmael was such a strong kid, and he basically turned his back on his loved ones and became a rebel. This was strange to me because he went most of his life doing everything alone due to the rebels taking his family away. I had a hard time believing Ishmael would take a turn again at the end to take his revenge on the rebels. He joined up with them and then went against them and watched them all suffer like they made him suffer for the first part in his life. At the end of the book, I am glad that Ishmael found a girl that treats him well and he went back to school for an education.

  4. After reading A Long Way Gone, I learned that in some cultures that are surrounded by war, children have to do things that you would never imagine. Also, that everybody in these villages knows everybody and they all treat each other like family. After running away from war, Ishmael realized the only chance he had for survival was to join the army and fight for the government, he was only 13 years old at this time. The thing that shocked me the most was that the government allowed and needed a bunch of young teenagers to be soldiers in the army. I couldn’t imagine being in an army and having to shoot people when I was 13. Something that seemed strange to me was how Ishmael was able to escape the attacks every time. I couldn’t believe the time Ishmael made it to a new village and all the people in the village were celebrating and dancing throughout the city, even though they were surrounded by war.

    1. Another thing I couldn't believe was that the army had boys fight who could barely carry their own gun. It also surprised me that Ishmael survived everything like during the first attack when he was standing out in the open, he didn't get shot.

I was shocked by Amir and Hassan's relationship and how they were able to hide all of these traumatic things from each other with how loyal they have always been to each other. They were also never really that big on family they just focused on themselves a lot throughout the book.

  10. I read I am Malala and I thought it was crazy how women are treated in their culture. They get little to no respect and are treated horribly. They get married off at young ages, aren't really allowed to get an education, have to completely cover up, and aren't allowed to leave their houses unless they are with their husband or a male family member. I just feel like the women in their culture should be treated better.

  13. Hunter Fosdal In the book kite runner Religion is basically the backbone of the book. Amir is a Pashtun and Hassan is Hazara and Hassan's religion does not believe in violence. In the book Hassan shows this at a pomegranate tree Amir starts throwing pomegranates at him and yells at Hassan to throw one back at him but only takes one and splits it open above Amir's head. another is when the Taliban came i simply did not fight back. Ali gave me the biggest surprise in the book because he was a leader in the Taliban who killed Hassan.

  16. In A Long Way Gone, I learned that some children who have to fight in war are forced to do things that no one wants to do. The war changed a lot of the kids and some families refused to take in the kids. I was shocked that the young soldiers got taken out of the war and brought to a rehabilitation center when a few of them were some of the best soldiers. It also shocked me because the war was nowhere near over yet and they were getting rid of soldiers. It seemed strange to me that at the first rehabilitation center, the children from the army and the rebels were put together. They were in a war against each other so I would think it would be obvious that they wouldn't get along. I couldn't believe that Ishmael survived because some parts in the story seem like nobody would survive but Ishmael survived it all. Every chapter, Ishmael had a couple days walk to each village and was met with danger and near-death experiences at every one, but I couldn't believe he kept going.

  17. the thing I couldn't believe in a long way gone was that the moment Ishmael returned from his conferences in America he and his new brothers and adoptive family had their city over run, resulting in them scrounging for food and attempting to flee from the bloodshed and escape to a whole new country. the fact that it completely blindsided them and that there was nothing to be done is kind of terrifying.

  31. After reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini I learned about their culture that the men are allowed to have multiple wives. The women are only allowed to have 1 husband, but their husband can have many wives. the wives are there to only please the man and to give him kids and if she can't she is worthless. For example, Mariam was unable to have kids, so Rasheed married Laila and then she was able to have kids so then Rasheed treated Mariam like a servant even though she is his wife. I was surprised that the men are able to have multiple wives, but the women can't and are only supposed to have kids only with their husbands. I personally did not like Rasheed at all during the book he was very rude and abusive to Mariam, Laila and her kids.

    2. Rasheed seems very unlikeable, and I never understood why this happens in a lot of cultures. Your book is a more extreme example but for a very long time men have treated women inferiorly and they've had less freedom than men, it's quite frustrating to see.

  32. When reading the book, I am Malala I found out the culture in Pakistan is nothing like the United States. They have many different traditions such as celebrating the birth of male babies and not female. Equality is not a thing in Pakistan. Women are expected to wear their burkas at all times and remain at home. Women are not allowed to live on their own, they must live with a male family member, whether is their father, brother or husband. Often times they would force young girls into marrying a chosen male. The most surprising part to me is that women were expected to be teachers but were not allowed the proper education. Malala's family had a very difficult time trusting the government because they would lie about the Taliban being gone from their country. I could not imagine living in a country where I am constantly controlled, and never given the same rights as the males around me.

They treat men so fair and they let them do anything they want anytime. You explained the summary really well and how it went down. Was very true.

  33. Yes, the treatment of women is very disgraceful and baffling in many foreign countries. It is hard to imagine that women are treated this way and can even be beaten for going out alone. And i like how the boys described how the boys described if they were close and if that village was doing well if there was the smell of cookie oil it was little details that made it easer to put your self in his shoes. 43. Reading I am Malala helped me understand a few things about Pakistan and the Islamic religion. Before reading the book, I was uninformed and reading this definitely helped me learn a bit about the traditions and beliefs of Pashtuns. I think something that shocked me about the culture was that women were told to cover up even more than they usually cover up, although I don't see normal head covering as being constrictive because it's more of a culture thing and Malala even said that becoming more modern doesn't mean leaving your culture behind in reference to her taking off her head covering. A lot of cultures have drastic differentiations between men and women's clothing and I think the head coverings are a good example of that. I think some people may believe that it is strict and is a tactic to control women but as long as the women choose to wear it then it doesn't have to be that way.
