Conflict--Every book has some sort of conflict that pulls the reader in and keeps the reader reading.  Conflict can be person vs. person, person vs. nature, person vs. self, person vs. society, or person vs. the supernatural.  Identify the primary conflict in your novel.  Who or what is involved with the main conflict?  What is the conflict?  How does your character handle himself/herself when faced with this conflict?  How does this conflict add to the story line of your novel?  How is the conflict resolved and what is the outcome?

Comments

  1. In the book "It Ends with Us", by Collen Hoover, there are multiple conflicts. The main character Lilly is struggling with her past, along with her relationship with her deceased father, along with a new relationship with a guy she recently met. She thought when her father passed away, she was free from abuse, but abuse returns to her life. Lilly goes to those close to her that she feels the most comfortable around for support. The conflicts add to the story from the very beginning, and they never leave the story until the end of the book. (I don't want to give away too much)

    1. First off, this book sounds very interesting, and it seems like the beginning of your book and mine are kind of alike. in mine Kya's father was very abusive to her mother and then her siblings. Kya meets a man that only uses her and if he doesn't get what he wants he is abusive towards her. Was Lilly's father only abusive to her or was its other people as well? Also is Lilly's new boyfriend abusive to her as to why the abuse has returned.

    2. In my book, Lia is also struggling with death. Her friend was found dead and she feels haunted by her. Does Lilly feel better when she goes to those she trusts or was she still struggling?

  2. in the book Basher five two the main conflict in the book is when Scott gets shot out of the air and has to survive the landing and the solders that are hunting him. What Scott did to not get caught was put this tarp over him and lay in a hole during the daytime to the Serbs wouldn't see him, and he only moved at nighttime so they wouldn't see him as easily. the way he got out of the woods is to wait until a jet flew over and see if he could get a radio signal and he finally got one so the us marines and air force came together, and they flew bunch of helicopters in to pick him up from the woods he was in

Elie try's staying strong because he still has his dad with him. the conflict makes the whole story line because it wouldn't be a good book without it.

  8. In the book Prisoner B- 3087 the conflict is that the Germans send all Jews under their control to concentration camps. They are worked very hard with very little food, and in constant threat of dying. The main character knows that in order to survive he has to blend in with the other prisoners. He handles the conflict about as well as most would suspect, at times he wishes he would just be killed, and other times he wants to survive and fight to stay alive. He knows that the war is ending soon, and that he just has to keep living day by day.

  9. In Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens the very first and most important conflict is about the main characters family. The main character is Kya. Kya's father is an abusive drunk and eventually the mother has gotten sick of dealing with him and left. After the mother left then Kya's siblings left as well leaving Kya all alone with her father. But now her father has not showed up at the house for a while leaving Ky all by herself. With her whole family gone she has to find/make food by herself and just learn how to survive. A normal person would go and ask for help but not Kya. Kya won't/ can't ask for help because she is an outcast living on the marsh and if she asks for help, nobody will. Her family, mainly her father, has told her not to go by people and to stay away from people because they are no good so that is why she can't ask for help. So, the conflict is a very big part if this book, showing that Kya may be young, but she is still capable of doing many things.

  12. In Night I would say that the conflict would be person vs person as well as person vs society. The person vs person aspect would be because of the jews turning against each other as well as the guards beating on and mistreating the jews. The person vs society would be a result from Hitlers influence and perception on jews making them a target in their society. The conflict the jews have with each other is survival. They attack each other and would kill one another for a peace of bread. The guards on the other hand just abuse their authority and do what they please to the jews. When Elie faces conflicts with the other prisoners he tries to settle and make peace by offering bread and such. When faced with conflicts with guards he conforms and does whatever it takes to survive. These conflicts show how harsh conditions were and without conflict this book wouldn't exist. In Night, the conflict does not get resolved. Elie looses his entire family, receives harsh beatings, is deprived of food and sleep and can not recognize himself in a mirror.

Roland generally stays composed when confronted with conflict but loses some control when he actually encounters the man in black. the conflict currently makes up the storyline as well. I'm not done yet, so it has yet to be resolved.

In my book Louie does not know if it is the right thing to knock the other team's player out just because hit is some hot stuff and the team can't stop them, but someone one on the team does and Louie lost his mind on the reefs and on his coach. he ended up getting suspended for his actions and he quit football. Louie is a great football player and ends up dropping out his senior year of high school all over a big hit in the game. The outcome for him is he would have more free time and worked.

  15. The main conflict in my book, Running Loose, is when the football coach tells the team to injure the opponent’s player, so they can win the game easily. The main character Louie and his coach are involved with this conflict. Louie thinks that there is no reason to injure the player on the other team because he wants to beat the team at their best. When one of Louie’s teammates injured the opposing team’s star player, Louie freaked out on the sideline. He screamed at the ref and then got in the coach’s face and eventually stormed off the field and quit the football team. This conflict affects Louie’s reputation at school, now only a few people will talk to him and without football, he has to find other things to do in his free time. The conflict wasn’t really resolved, nobody questioned the coach and Louie quit the team because he couldn’t handle what the coach had them do.

  16. I would say that the conflict in Chinese Handcuffs falls under person vs person. Jen's problems arise from her stepdad abusing her but so far she hasn't done anything about it because he threatened to hurt her loved ones. Dillon's problems are similar in terms of it being a person vs person. His problems are due to his brother and his relationships with other people. For example, he has a little bit of conflict with Caldwell, the school principal, when he gets into an argument with him and he gets suspended for 3 days. He only gets on Caldwell's nerves again by wearing an innapropriate shirt when he comes back. I think his way of handling conflict is a bit strange, he doesn't really do anything to handle it, he just makes something petty out of it.

Lia's mom, dad, and stepmom try and support her and get her help, but Lia sees it as being unhelpful, a waste of money, and making it worse. After hurting herself, Lia is put in the hospital again but when she is stable enough to go home, she leaves her family and goes to a motel with her friend Elijah. Another conflict arose when Elijah left Lia by herself with no food and $20. Lia was forced to figure out how to live. 20. In my book Night. The conflict that the main character is facing is the constant option of death he faces. Being in the labor camps and being threatened to be killed if they do not work to the standards the SS want is a horrible conflict that the main character faces day after day. He faces the conflict by just doing whatever the SS asks of him and doing it to the absolute best of his ability in hopes it is good enough to stay alive. When she first came into the brothel she was very scared but as time went on she became more used to her surroundings. When the new girls come in and get scared, she doesn't really react anymore, not even when they are screaming. Honestly seeing her get like this is very sad and it's even sadder to think that this happens to other people who get sold into prostitution. While Lakshmi does become desensitized, she's not all entirely like that in the end. Deep down, she's still cares for others and she wants to get out of there so she keeps fighting and eventually that leads to her getting rescued
