Blog Response #11

When an author writes a book, he or she has a purpose as to why he/she is sharing this story.  This lesson or theme plays out throughout the book.  Share what you believe the author's purpose was for writing this book.  What lesson do you feel he/she wanted you to learn?  (In responding to other's blog posts, try to connect your theme with other's books.)

  1. the purpose of the book the summer i turned pretty is mostly about Belly the main character and how she only lives in the summer. every summer her and her family go to the beach house and every year is different. this year shes pretty and old enough to start dating. the main lesson of the book is Belly learning self-discovery and learning how to properly balance her feelings with not only herself but with the guys she likes.

In my book the theme relates in sort of the same way, my main character made a promise to find his sister in the war and to survive the war as well. these were the two main goals in my book and even though he faced challenges he succeeded in the end, the same way you main character reached there goals

  5. I read Grenade by Alan Gratz there are multiple themes in my book the three that really stuck out to me was, self growth, change, and survival. I believe that the purpose of the book is to prove to readers that even though Hideki was a shy boy in the beginning through the war he had to do dangerous things he would of never thought to do before. by doing this he survived the war in his home country and was able to become a brave boy for his family. I think the main lessons of the book were to not give up on something just because it is hard.

  6. All in all I feel like the author more was just telling his story instead of trying to show a lesson. I guess a small lesson could possibly be to never take a day for granted because the next day could completely change your life forever. Could be for good, or for bad. But either way you should cherish every moment you have because everything could completely change.

  8. I believe the purpose of my book, Where the Crawdad Sings by Delia Owens is to treat everyone with respect no matter who they are or where they come from. Kya is the main character in Where the Crawdad Sings. She has been an outcast her entire life by living in the marsh. Everyone thinks she is stupid and don't know anything when in reality Kya is actually super smart and kind. the people in town just talk bad about her and the guys in town think she will be easy to get, if you know what I mean, but she has been told to not trust people because they will just treat her badly. So, I believe that Where the Crawdad Sings is to treat everyone with respect and nicely because we are all human beings no matter where we come from or how we look and act.

    2. Our main lessons are similar in the way that Eden believes in the fact that you should treat everyone with respect also with being adopted she never really had that. Untill she got her new forever home. And also Bonnie always had to stand up for Eden when she would always get bullied because Eden was never able to stand up for herself. She would get bullied for how she acted and just the fact she was adopted which was unfair.

My book shawshank redemption is a story of redemption which shows that you can overcome any obstacle thrown at you as long as you dont give up on yourself the main character andy is taken advantage of because he is put in prison for life without parole for killing his wife which he didnt do eventually he is able to escape and live a happy life it may not have been in the right way but it happened so the lessson the author teaches us is to never give up and chase your goals.

  10. I am reading Goodbye Perfect by Sara Barnard. I believe the authors purpose of writing this book was that like to teach all of the readers some lessons of what can happen in life. It's just a great book about teenage friendships and all the ups and downs that you can deal with. That is kinda just the theme of friendships and what they can do to yourself and everyone around you. Some of the lessons i feel like she wanted us to learn was expect the unexpected what i mean by that was Eden wasn't expecting for Bonnie to just run off and give up her whole life to be with her music teacher. Another is that some friends will go and change, because like Bonnie and Eden were super close and something in Bonnie just changed.

    1. Hi Heather- The theme of our books are similar in a few ways, they both deal with relationships at the forefront. In my book "It Ends with Us" the main character Lilly is heart broken when she finds out her husband Ryle is not the loving guy she thought he was. He was instead very similar to her father in the sense he was physically abusive. Lilly also rekindles an old friendship/relationship with her first love Atlas. Lilly finds out that their reconnection happened for a reason and that she was meant to be with Atlas all along.

    2. Our books are kind of alike. I just got done reading Where the Crawdad Sings by Delia Owens. I say that ours are kinds of alike because you said that the theme of your book was friendships and what they can do to yourself and everyone around you. My book Kya (the main character) was always found to be the weird girl, so everyone called her the marsh girl because she always lived alone. Kya did become friends with Tate and then fell in love for him but then he left for college and didn't come back for years but at the end of the book Kya and Tate were living together and deeply in love just about married. So, Kya had Tate as a true friend who actually helped her and didn't treat her like the marsh girl. Tate actually taught her how to read and write since she never went to school.

  11. In the book Wolf Hollow I feel the purpose was for Lew to find out what the truth was behind the death of her brother. She had also wanted to know the truth behind the death of Grace and Noah McDonough. This book showed all the emotional struggles that she went through to get the solution. Lew had found out that her brother's wife was having an affair with Linda which was very strict about money and Stan was the guy that did all her dirty work. Stan had killed Grace Noah and Pete for one Grace was the richest person in the county. Then Pete who was extremely smart and was successful in his business work. He had a lawsuit against a company which made him more likely to become richer. Stans plan was to kill them all and get their money and live the best life. It didn't work in his favor because he had crashed into a tree and died. Linda was shortly arrest for being involved in all of the things he had done. So, the purpose in the book is to show that getting a clue to one things pushes you to move forward.

In my book, Where the Crawdad Sings, once Kya (main character) passed away Tate (her best friend and lover) actually found the poems that Kya wrote kind of talking about the death, but Tate also found the necklace that was on Chase Andrews body. Kya was tried for the murder of him but there was no clear evidence that she did it, so Kya was found not guilty. So, the fact that Tate found the evidence after Kya died 40 years later is unreal that she was tried and got away with the murder.

  12. In Night, I believe that Elie Wiesels purpose was to give a first hand viewpoint of what it was really like to survive/ experience the haulocaust as a jew. I think he just wanted to share his story as well as show how horrible and traumatic it was.

  13. In the book night, Elie Wiesel states in the preface of the book that he wrote and published his novel to really show what the Nazis did to the Jews and show how horrible it was for the Jews. He wrote this novel to spread light on the fact that mankind didnt know or care that an entire race was put at risk and that is should never happen again. The main lesson would have to be even in the darkest times of humanity you should stand up and fight for as many lives as you can, rather than sit in silence and watch humanity fall apart.

  17. I don't I entirely understand Chris Crutcher's reason for writing Chinese Handcuffs. Depending on how the story plays out in the end, this book could teach about learning to speak out on sexual abuse that goes on in your life and also learning to grieve over death and unrequited love. This probably isn't a direct reason Crutcher wrote the book, but I believe readers can relate to the experiences that characters go through and they can find comfort in seeing things turn out well for them. For me personally, I can relate to a lot of the guilt that Jennifer goes through over something that happened in her childhood even though it wasn't her fault. From the 2 stories that I've read from Chris Crutcher and what I have heard, he focuses a lot of adolescents, and I think a reason he does that is because he understands how the brain of a teenager works, at least more so than other adults do, so he writes stories that teens will like and relate to.

    1. I agree that Chris Crutcher's stories are easy to relate to as a high school student. I also think the theme in Running Loose is similar to the one in Chinese Handcuffs because they both involve speaking out and standing up for what is right.

  18. I think the purpose in Running Loose is to do what is right and ask for help when you need it. The main character Louie stood up for what he believed was right and he had to ask for help several times when he encountered tough situations. Louie had to find support to help him through a death of a someone that was close to him. I believe that Chris Crutcher wanted to teach the lesson of always doing what is right no matter the outcome and that it is okay to ask for help when you need it. I also think that Chris Crutcher might have had similar experiences to Louie in his own life and that is why he wrote this story that way.

Along with that I think this book is written to spread awareness of sex trafficking. I think reading about what Lakshmi went through and seeing her describe the men who rape her and how she felt before during and after of being raped is very disturbing and it becomes more creepy when you realize that there's actual people who have gone through this. It's quite sickening when you really think about it but being knowing these little details really makes you become aware of the victims.
